reticular formation

Characteristic clusters of nerve cell bodies (gray matter) and their meshwork or reticulum, of fibers which are found in the brainstem and the diencephalon.
The reticular formation is thought to be a complex, highly integrated mechanism which exerts both inhibition and facilitation on almost every type of activity of the
nervous system.
The reticular formation also relays eye and ear signals to the cerebellum so that the cerebellum can integrate visual, auditory, and vestibular stimuli.
